OUR COALITION

The Section 106 Coalition began with an Open Letter to Congress and quickly grew into an unprecedented national alliance of more than 800+ Tribal Nations and preservation, civil-rights, environmental, architectural, archaeological, professional, neighborhood, religious, business, tourism, and community organizations representing approximately 800+ million Americans. Our participants differ in size, geography, constituency, and political perspective, but we share a conviction: The federal government must identify what is at risk, listen to the people who know and value it, and consider the consequences before it destroys an irreplaceable place.

We are a fast-moving coalition of the willing—not a new organization or a Washington institution. Each participant retains its independence, identity, and authority to determine which Coalition activities it supports, and Tribal Nations that join the Coalition speak for themselves. The Coalition does not represent any Tribal Nation, and participation is not a substitute for government-to-government consultation with the United States. What unites us is a commitment to defend Section 106 against immediate threats, strengthen it for the future, and build a national constituency powerful enough to ensure that government listens before it acts.

Our Open Letter asks Congress to confront three simultaneous threats to the Section 106: efforts to gut its implementing regulations by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, efforts to rollback the statute’s protections by certain members of Congress, and evasion of the law by the White House and federal agencies. It also offers a better course—modernize and strengthen Section 106 through adequate funding, earlier consultation, better technology, improved coordination, and reforms grounded in evidence rather than myth.
